Learn Photography with Stu Brown
My love of photography began when I was six and was given my first camera. Not long afterwards, I was incredibly proud to win the Langbaurgh Young Photographer Award. Some of my fondest memories are of evenings spent with my dad in our loft darkroom, developing prints by hand and hanging them over the bath to dry. That excitement of watching a photograph come to life has never really left me.
Over the years, that childhood fascination grew into both my passion and my career, but one of the things I enjoy most now is passing that experience on. I run relaxed group workshops and one-to-one photography tuition across North Yorkshire and the North East, helping people understand their cameras, build their confidence and enjoy taking photographs without feeling overwhelmed by technical jargon.
Alongside my workshops, I’m also the photographer behind Discovery Photography, where I’ve spent nearly two decades photographing weddings in all kinds of locations, lighting and weather. That real-world experience shapes the way I teach: keeping things practical, explaining them clearly and helping people feel confident enough to concentrate on the photograph rather than worry about every camera setting.
My work has been published in national newspapers including The Times, The Daily Telegraph and the Daily Mail. I was also the official photographer for the Klondike Cycle Race for three consecutive years and have created commercial photography for organisations including SAKS, Cineworld and the North York Moors National Park Authority, alongside many local businesses. That breadth of professional experience means the techniques I teach have been tested in real situations, where getting the photograph matters.
Photography has always been much more than a job to me, and teaching gives me the chance to share that enthusiasm with other people. There’s nothing better than seeing someone stop worrying about their settings, begin to understand their camera and feel genuinely proud of the photographs they’re creating.
