Gannets in the Sky: Winged Wonders of Bempton Cliffs
On an exhilaratingly windy day at RSPB Bempton Cliffs, the conditions were ripe for a photography adventure. This spectacular nature reserve, perched on dramatic chalk cliffs overlooking the North Sea, is a haven for seabird enthusiasts and photographers alike. With the wind whipping through my hair, I was eager to capture the essence of the majestic gannets as they soared through the turbulent skies.
The gannet, known for its striking white plumage and impressive wingspan, is one of the UK’s largest seabirds. Watching these birds in flight is nothing short of breathtaking. The strong winds on this particular day caused the gannets to perform remarkable aerial displays, gracefully navigating the gusts with effortless elegance. Their ability to dive headlong into the sea to catch fish adds an element of drama that draws photographers to capture each intricate moment.
Setting up my camera with a longer lens allowed me to capture the action from a distance without disturbing the birds. As I looked through the viewfinder, I was struck by the contrast of the gannets against the deep blue ocean and vibrant sky. The wind created dramatic landscapes of clouds that added character to the scenes I was capturing. With each gust, the birds would rise higher, swooping and gliding, occasionally locking their wings for a brief moment of stillness before diving into the waves.
A posh brider | RSPB Saltholme
Here’s me sat in a hide at RSPB Saltholme next to the mature enthusiasts, dressed form head to toe in their oakleaf camouflage. Every inch of their equipment matching their demeanour. They looked like they are about to shoot their target as an army sniper.
